Anna Maria Island is rich in history beginning with the archaic people who were hunters, gatherers and weavers.. Then, the Spanish, thus Cortez Village. Did you know that the famous Jean Lafitte shipwrecked here? Was Leffis Key originally called Lafitte's Key? Are there coins? The first homesteaders arrived in 1893 naming the barrier island Anna Maria, giving birth to one of Florida's "best kept secrets".
